Reston was just a large section of the Northern Virginia waiting to be developed. Originally owned by Lord Fairfax it wasn’t until Robert E. Simon conceived the planned community that Reston came to be what it is today – a hustling, bustling town onto itself. Planned as part of the “New Town” movement, the guiding principles for development stressed quality of life in all stages of life. This principle applies to housing needs, transportation and recreation. Reston Town Center is the heart of the city and has five villages surrounding it, all connected by walkways and trails.
Reston Town Center is the ideal downtown with access to more than 50 retail shops, 30+ restaurants, a multiplex, and the Hyatt Regency Hotel. At the heart and center is he Pavilion, host to concerts, special events, festivals and ice skating in the winter – bringing culture and entertainment to its residents is what makes Reston unique and desirable for residents and visitors.
Housing is Reston was planned so residents from every walk of life could call Reston their home. Five Planned villages include Lake Anne, Hunter’s Woods, Tall Oaks, South Lakes and North Point. Each designed to be within a half mile walking distance to retail and community services. The villages predate the Town Center and clustered townhomes and apartments in the surrounding areas. Each village has a designated pool, tennis courts and parks. The Reston Community Center provides indoor/ outdoor activities year round. Recreation and access to nature are part of the founding principles for Reston.
Designed to be not only a livable community, the vision was that residents would live, work and play in Reston. Reston offers tremendous employment opportunities for is residents as well as commuters that travel to Reston each day for work and stay for pleasure into the evening. The Dulles Corridor runs through Reston and provides access to the airport as well as surrounding areas for even more employment opportunities.
Living, working, playing and having fun while doing it is what makes Reston a place so many in Northern Virginia call home for life.
